From CBS News’ The Showbuzz, Britney Spears went pooch shopping and – strangely similar to a fast food delivery order –  purchased a $3,000 Yorkshire Terrier puppy in “30 minutes or less”.

Spears’ power shopping trip has caught the attention of the  HSUS, scrutinizing her behavior, as they are concerned  that not only she purchased a pet from a puppy store but also took very little time to make such a major decision. 

“Ms. Spears is setting a damaging example to the public. Most dogs sold in pet stores come from puppy mills — factory-like facilities, churning out purebred and “designer” puppies in large numbers,” said Stephanie Shain, the HSUS director of outreach for companion animals.

She is not the only celebrity in the media attention for glamorizing “pocket puppies”.  Paris Hilton and other high-profile celebs have driven the popularity of such designer breeds and in doing so, helps puppy mills thrive. 

Because of their status they have a very large influence on a very large audience.  Most people do not make the connections between buying pets from pet stores and the terrible conditions in the puppy mills supplying these dogs, but because Brit or Paris does – it must be ok.
