Irene Pepperberg bought Alex, an African Grey parrott, from an animal shop in 1973.  Since then, the parrot learned enough English to identify 50 objects, seven colors and five shapes, and has helped researchers at Brandeis University  in Waltham, Mass.  for over 30 years to help better understand the avian brain.  Pepperberg discovered Alex dead in his cage last Friday.  The cause of death is unknown.  A touching way to say goodbye, Pepperberg recalls their last words the night before she found him in his cage:

She recalls the bird said: “You be good. I love you.” She responded, “I love you, too.” The bird said, “You’ll be in tomorrow,” and she responded, “Yes, I’ll be in tomorrow.”
